Project background

As the capital of Cape Province on Pakistan's northwest frontier, Peshawar has a large population and enjoys a superior geographical position, making it one of the important transport hubs of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. Co-financed by the French Development Agency and the European Investment Bank with $75 million, the project, starting at Chamkani on GT Road and ending at Karkhano Market on Jamrood Road, is the first dedicated bus rapid transit line in the Cape Province of Pakistan.

Client's requirement

With a growing population and higher requirements of rapid economic development, the original transport system can no longer meet the mobility needs of the people, resulting in traffic congestion and mobility difficulties for residents. The local government hopes that the project will effectively improve the public transport system in Peshawar, ensure the orderly and efficient operation of public transport, alleviate local traffic congestion, reduce the environmental pollution and resource waste caused by traffic accidents and congestion, and improve the mobility experience of users of urban road facilities.

Solutions

According to the field study results in Peshawar, four major systems including intelligent transport system, ticketing system, station management system, and bicycle sharing system have been planned and constructed, with 26 kilometers of highways, 31 stations, 220 buses and other ancillary facilities. Through software engineering, satellite positioning, wireless data communication, vehicle CAN bus data acquisition, audio and video digital coding and decoding, IC card payment, Internet application and other technologies, the project helps public transport operators to improve their management and service capacity through informatization, and to realize sustainable and rapid development.

The project construction includes the design, development, and deployment of vehicle management system of operation, command and dispatch, fleet management system, control command center management system, business monitoring and reporting system, intelligent information management system, professional application software system for automatic toll collection system, and mobile application software. It also includes the design and installation of passenger information system, public broadcast system, security monitoring system, data storage and backup system, biometric system, and on-board TV playout system. In addition, the installation and debugging of related on-board information terminals, station information terminals, electronic station signs, IC card readers, ticket vending machines, call center management systems, wireless communication system terminals and other specialized application terminals were carried out. The project includes the building of general hardware such as servers and PCs, storage devices, display devices, computer room equipment, communication networks, network equipment, security devices, and general software supporting facilities such as basic software, middleware software, and application support platforms.

Customer value

This project was recognized by the prime minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, who praised the project as a model of smart bus projects in Pakistan. By applying the intelligent information management system and automatic toll collection system, the demand for human resources has reduced, the asset utilization efficiency has improved, the ticket purchasing has become more convenient, and the overall enterprise management level has been significantly improved; the intelligent information management system provides multi-channel information releasing service, which has greatly enhanced service quality, benefited passengers of public transport, increased the overall market share of public transportation operators, and risen the main business income of enterprises. Moreover, while providing information releasing service, the enterprises can expand their advertising business scope via posting advertisements and the on-board playout system, thus increasing their revenue through multiple channels. In addition, the construction, opening to traffic and operation of the entire Peshawar BRT project has created 4,000 jobs, benefiting 600,000 citizens, and increasing local employment opportunities for higher employment rate. This has reduced criminal offenses and brought far-reaching socio-economic benefits.
