Project background


Lahore, the second largest city in Pakistan, is an important area of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. With rapid economic development, it has become an important industrial center housing a population of 10 million, playing a vital role in influencing the entire Middle East. Lahore ITS project is the first intelligent traffic management system project introduced to Pakistan, with a value of about 70 million. The Pakistani side attaches great importance to this project.


Client's requirement


Lahore suffers a complex traffic situation with a wide variety of vehicles and a poor traffic system. As the city development gathers pace, which leads to the influx of external population, the number of motor and non-motor vehicles increase dramatically, further straining the limited road resources, and escalating traffic congestion and disorder. The Pakistani side hopes that the Safe City project will improve the urban vehicle management capacity, alleviate the straining of traffic resources, and reduce traffic safety hazards and violations.


Solutions


Based on the investigation of urban traffic and safety issues in Lahore, we have developed seven major systems through software engineering, satellite positioning, wireless data communication, intelligent signal control, cloud computing & big data analysis system for vehicles, neural network automatic recognition for license plates, traffic flow monitoring, full-time induction control of traffic signals, two-way driving green waves, etc. The seven systems are intelligent traffic signal control system, automatic snapping system for off-site violations, intelligent checkpoint recording system for vehicles, road traffic guidance and broadcasting system, vehicle cloud computing & big data analysis system, neural network license plate automatic recognition system, and disaster recovery backup system. We have built and renovated 146 intersection signal machines and signal lights, 112 intersection electronic police, snapping devices for passing vehicles in 72 city entrances and exits and critical checkpoints, and 75 sets of large guidance screens. The equipment covers 90% of the roads and intersections in Lahore.


Customer value


We carried out targeted deployment for local traffic disorder, high accident rate, red light running and other illegal and disciplinary acts; in response to complex and diverse license plates that cause recognition difficulty in Pakistan, we employed image recognition system based on artificial neural network with a recognition rate of up to 85% for 40 customized license plates. The project has ascended the intelligent transport system in Lahore from zero to international advanced level, greatly improving the mobility efficiency and safety of residents, reducing environmental pollution caused by traffic accidents and congestion, improving residents' mobility experience, lowering the consumption of local police resources, providing important data support for Pakistan's anti-terrorism endeavor. With the above benefits, the project has gained high recognition from customers.
